Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
